    Through an innovative three phase (either stand alone or in tandem), participants will obtain an understanding and appreciation of the role and value of knowledge sharing in research and institutional organization and will share and experience the application of knowledge sharing concepts and approaches.

  • The goal of the training course on urban agriculture in Anglophone Africa is to Improve the understanding of urban agriculture in its various forms and to prepare for effective participation in multi-stakeholder development processes.
  • The objectives of this course are:

    • To familiarize the participants with the concepts of design of experiments and analysis of experimental data.
    • To acquaint the participants with the use of statistical software packages for statistical data analysis.
  • Throughout West Asia and North Africa faba bean yields are low and unstable. But yields can be improved through controlled hybridization between known parents. By using hybridization techniques, breeders can develop new varieties by incorporating desirable attributes of one parent into another. These varieties may produce high and stable yields, be tolerant to stress and have high quality seed

    This module is designed to present background information on faba bean hybridization and briefly outlines the crossing technique.

  • As the availability of nitrogenous fertilizers diminishes while their cost rises, farmers look toward other -- more sustainable -methods to meet their nitrogen requirements.  Many farmers in Central and West Asia and North Africa are replacing traditional fallow with legume crops in their farming system.  These legume crops have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen.

    Biological nitrogen fixation can play an important role in improving the sustainability of the farming system by reducing the need for inputs.

    This module will explain the process of biological nitrogen fixation and illustrate its importance in agriculture in the Central and West Asia and North Africa region.

  • Chickpea is the most important pulse crop in the world. It is an important source of protein and plays a significant role in the farming systems of many countries. Chickpea has been cultivated for at least 7,000 years, and man, conciously or unconciously, has selected improved types as he has done with other crops.

    No recorded history is available to indicate when, where, or how chickpea breeding efforts began. Now, breeders are increasingly using hybridization techniques to create the genetic variability they need to select improved culticars.

    This online learning module has been designed to be used as a self-study tool for individual learners. Learners can progress through the module at their own pace and repeat parts as they wish. The module contains review questions. Stop at these prompts to answer the questions.

  • This is basically a series of narrated slide presentations on the subject of Domestication of Agroforestry Trees - Clonal Cultivars producing Agroforestry Tree Products (AFTPs) that have been used in support of several face-to-face learning events. They can be viewed as Open Education Resources which can be (re)used by those wanting to learn more about this topic or those teaching it. Provided there is sufficient interest in it, it can be offered as a facilitated on-line learning event or a blended course combining on-line learning and interaction with a short face-to-face problem solving workshop at an appropriate venue.   • The World Agroforestry Centre offers an innovative training course “Contextualising Teaching and Learning in Schools Using Natural Resources - the case of school tree nurseries” by distance learning. The course helps participants to get a broader understanding of problems and issues related to tree nurseries in schools within the framework of education for sustainable development, and to analyse information and find workable solutions. Specific objectives of the training course are to share experiences in contextualisation of teaching and learning using natural resources, to demonstrate how concepts and principles of tree nursery establishment and management can be made relevant to primary and secondary schools and their communities, and to identify opportunities for and constraints to school-community linkages related to tree nursery and natural resource management projects.

  • Vegetative propagation methods have been developed and used for centuries. Especially in temperate regions, vegetative propagation has been an important approach in the domestication of fruit species and particular methods have been developed for different species. This course has been organized for the benefit of participants from Eastern and Southern Africa but it is likely that in the future it will also be organized in other agro-ecological regions where ICRAF conducts agroforestry research in collaboration with national institutions.

    This online course is designed to give you information and skills you will need to write a proposal to an international donor or funding partner.

    In this course there are 14 sessions, and an introduction. Each consists of a series of texts, followed by exercises or questions, so that you can test your understanding as you go.

    After you have completed all the sessions, we think you will be ready to write a convincing full proposal either in response to a competitive grants program, or in response to a specific request for a full proposal from a given investor/donor.

  • Research in agricultural development is only of value if the results are understood and applied. Although how this is done is a matter of great debate, clearly of major importance is the collation and transmission of the results of research in a manner that it can be accessed and used by others.

    However, much research in agricultural development often remains in files, notebooks, document folders, on computers, or in little seen or distributed 'internal' reports and is never exposed to the judgement or scrutiny of the broader research community. One of the reasons for this is a lack of training, experience and confidence in the skills and processes of bringing results to other potential users in an acceptable form.

    This course is intended to help provide researchers and research managers with both the skills and confidence to disseminate research findings to audiences, both of fellow researchers and other stakeholders, in both written and oral form. By developing these skills, and contributing to both the efficiency and effectiveness of the process of communicating research it is therefore intended to contribute to the increased effectiveness and efficiency of the research process overall.
